Chelan Butte
Chelan Butte is known world wide for its big thermals and the XC potential over the 'flats' (Eastern WA farmlands). Chelan has a reputation for having 'big' air, which can definitely be the case depending on conditions. Climb rates of over 2000fpm are possible, with 1000-1500fpm frequently observed. The fine soil of the 'flats' is easily pulled into strong-cored thermals, producing prominent 'dust devils' that pepper the landscape. With multiple spacious launches and LZs, it's no wonder that national and international competitions are frequently held at the Butte. Launch Elevation is approximately 3800ft and the main LZ is at 800ft. View Guide.
Blanchard Hill
Blanchard Hill overlooks the Skagit Valley to the south and Samish Bay and the San Juan Islands to the West. It is the southern most point of a west facing range of hills. There is a well groomed, although short, west facing launch and a slightly more challenging south facing launch. The LZ is an enormous green grassy field, with adequate bail out options. Blanchard is a straight forward and fabulous site for new or rusty pilots who want to get in lots of launches and landings, especially with a relatively short drive up to launch. Launch is at 1252ft and the LZ is at 10ft. View Guide.
Baldy Butte
Baldy Butte is just south of Ellensburg and next to the Columbia River. There are multiple launch sites that are clear of rocks and shrubs, also the top of the Butte is mostly clear and free of obstacles. The Butte drops down to the northeast and the southwest. The LZ's at the foot of the Butte are a little restricted, but the area is very open so there are plenty of places to land if necessary, but try to respect private lands as you could jeopardize the site. The openness of the area also makes for great XC flying. The launch elevaton is 3225ft. and the LZ is at 1250ft. View Guide.
